Jenna Ortega, one of the most recognized young actresses today, has expressed her opposition to the trend of changing the gender of iconic male characters, such as the famous agent James Bond.
In a recent interview with MTV, Ortega made his position clear by stating:
«I love that there are a lot more female leads these days, I think that’s very special. But we should have our own. I don’t like it when it’s like a spinoff, I don’t want to see something like “Jamie Bond”. No? I want to see another badass.»
Original characters
Jenna explained that while it’s positive to see more strong female roles on screen, it’s crucial that those characters are fresh and have their own stories.
The possibility of a female James Bond has been discussed for decades. Even before the first films in the series became successful, some producers considered the idea of changing the gender of the famous spy.
However, after meeting Sean Connery, who had played 007 since 1962, the idea was scrapped and the role remained in male hands for more than two decades. However, the controversy resurfaced recently when Daniel Craig, who played Bond for 15 years, announced his departure from the role. This opened up the debate on who should succeed him.
Posture by Barbara Broccoli
Barbara Broccoli, producer of the franchise, has been clear in her position: James Bond will remain a male character. Broccoli has stated on several occasions that she has no intention of making Agent 007 a woman.
According to reports from Dexertoit is more important to create new, strong and original female characters than to adapt those originally conceived as male. “I don’t think there are enough great female characters, and it’s very important to me that we make films for women about women,” she said in an interview.
