Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The British Ministry of Defense official said that it had deployed around 8,000 troops for joint exercises on the borders of eastern Europe as a form of deterrence from Russian aggression after the invasion of Ukraine.
According to the official, the drills will last for months from Finland to northern Macedonia. In addition to Britain, this exercise also involved French and United States troops.
“Europe’s security is of paramount importance (as) one of the largest joint deployments since the Cold War,” British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said on Friday (29/4/2022), as quoted by AFP.
To support the exercise, the UK also deployed 72 tanks, two Challenger aircraft, and 120 armored fighting vehicles, artillery guns, helicopters and drones.
Meanwhile, British Army Officer Lt. Gen. Ralph Wooddisse said London contributed significantly to the defense of Europe and deterred Russian aggression.
“The British Army’s series of exercises was very important to both of them,” Woddisse said.
Until now, Russia has been pounding Ukraine since President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion on February 24. The days after that, explosions and fighting continued.
A number of countries, especially the West, are busy sending weapons to help defend Ukraine.
Britain, for example, became one of the missiles to Ukraine against Russia and said it was ready to help send tanks and planes.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said Ukraine should be freed after Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014.
