Jelena Ostapenko wins Linz tournament, Diana Shnaider triumphs in Thailand – WTA news updates

The Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, first seed, was proclaimed champion of the Linz (Austria) tournament, on a hard court, by beating the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, second seed, in the final by 6-2 and 6-3.

In the first set, Ostapenko took advantage, in the fourth game, of the only breaking ball in the first seven games and later, in the eighth, he closed his partial advantage with the third opportunity available to him. In the second set he broke his opponent’s serve in the fourth game and, after wasting his first match point to the rest in the eighth, ended up closing it in the ninth. In this way he wins his first title this season.

The young Russian Diana Shnaider, 19, won her first WTA circuit title in the Thailand tournament after beating the champion of the last edition, the Chinese Zhu Lin, 6-3, 2-6 and 6-1. The Russian, who left the top three seeds in the competition on her way to the title, took two hours to beat the eastern player, the second favorite in the tournament. Shnaider will return to the top-100 of the WTA rankings this Monday.
