‘Jēkabpils Lūši’ season starts with victory over RTU / ‘Border Guard’ / ‘Jūrmala’

One of the strongest volleyball teams of Latvia in recent years, RTU / “Robežsardze” / “Jūrmala”, started the new season of the Baltic “Credit24” Master League with a victory in five sets on Saturday.

Last year’s teams RTU / “Border Guard” and “Limbazi” / MSG joined forces and this season will start under the name RTU / “Border Guard” / “Jurmala”.

In the winning ranks with 19 points, the most productive was Kristaps Šmits, who scored five points with a block game. Zigurds Adamovičs added 12 points, but Jānis Medenis added one less.

In the joint RTU / “Border Guard” / “Jurmala” unit, Aleksandrs Avdejevs stood out with 22 points, nine of which were obtained by playing in the block. Renārs Pauls Jansons added 15 points, but Gatis Garklāvs also earned ten more.

The decisive set between the two teams started similarly (3: 3), but after two exact blocks and the opponent’s mistake, the Jēkabpils team gained a three-point advantage – 6: 3. RTU / “Robežsardze” / “Jūrmala” was able to approach the two-point deficit several times, but Edvins Skrūder’s elusive service was already safer 12: 8. At the end, RTU / “Robežsardze” / “Jūrmala” scored one point themselves, but the other was awarded by the opponent, as a result, the Jēkabpils team started the season with success.

In the second Saturday duel Daugavpils University / “Ezerzeme” lost “Biolars” / “Jelgava” with 1-3 (13:25, 26:24, 23:25, 19:25) guests.

Daugavpils residents could participate in this game only after the Covid-19 tests were performed.

This year, ten teams will take part in the men’s competition “Credit24” – five from Estonia (Tartu “Bigbank”, “Parnu”, “Saaremaa”, Tallinn “Selver” and “TalTech”), four from Latvia (Daugavpils University / “Ezerzeme”, RTU / “Border Guard” / “Jūrmala”, “Jēkabpils Lūši” and “Biolars” / “Jelgava”), and among the participants there will again be Lithuanian representatives – Klaipeda “Amber Volley”.

At the end of March this year, due to the proliferation of Covid-19, the organizers of the tournament decided not to play in the “Final four” tournament, as a result of which the champions were not crowned.

In the semi-finals on March 13, “Lynx” had to play with “Saaremaa” represented by Arta Caica, and Tartu “Bigbank” – with “Selver” from Tallinn.
