The Jeju Air branch manager who worked overseas suddenly passed away last year.
The bereaved family prepared to apply for an industrial accident, claiming that they suffered from overwork for a long time, but Jeju Air tried to appease them by asking them to ease the burden on the company, and also put pressure on them, saying that it would be difficult for the family.
This is an exclusive report by reporter Lee Ji-eun.

Last November, the manager of Jeju Air’s Yantai branch in China died of a heart attack on his way home from work.
The bereaved families say they were under a lot of pressure to perform.
[사망 지점장 아내/음성변조 : “내가 여기서 성과를 못 내면 또 승진을 못 하지. 이 시기에 어디 나가면 취직할 데도 없고.”]
Text messages exchanged with my wife at the time.
It says that although he worked nearly 12 hours a day, he had to go to work even on holidays because he couldn’t handle the workload.
[사망 지점장 아내/음성변조 : “회사에서는 전혀 지원을 안 해주니 대외적으로 영업도 하고 월말 정산이라든지 직원 관리도 해야 되고 그러니까 모든 걸 다 했다고 보시면 돼요.”]
The bereaved family prepared to file an industrial accident claim, claiming that overwork for over a year was the cause of death.
I requested the necessary documents from the company, but was told that it was difficult to provide them.
[제주항공 관계자/음성변조 : “요청하시는 자료나 이런 것들이 있다 하더라도 제한적일 수밖에 없을 거고 아마 그런 자료들은 있지도 않을 거예요.”]
[제주항공 관계자/음성변조 : “산재로 인정되면 회사는 근로조건이 안 좋은 회사가 돼요. 그런 게 회사한테 좋은 건 아니거든요.”]
There was also continued pressure that the company could prevent even if an industrial accident was filed.
[제주항공 관계자/음성변조 : “회사가 (산재) 아니라는 걸 입증하기 위해 노력할 수밖에 없어요. 진행 과정에서 속상한 일들도 생겨요.”]
Of the 10 domestic aviation workers who died in the past five years, six were from Jeju Air.
Two people died suddenly, but there were no cases recognized as industrial accidents.
[박상혁/국회 국토교통위원/민주당 : “유독 한 항공사에서 이렇게 절반 이상의 사고가 발생한다라는 데 대해서는 굉장히 우려스럽고요. 노동부에서 특별근로감독을 한다든지 철저한 조사가 필요하다고 생각합니다.”]
Jeju Air explained that the branch manager’s workload at the time was not large, but that they would discuss industrial accident procedures with the bereaved family.
