The interest of the USA in the electrical interconnection between Greece and Cyprus, as well as in the new round of natural gas supplies to the EU, is strong.

It is no coincidence that, on the sidelines of a “closed” two-day workshop starting today in Athens on the common natural gas markets in the European Union, a special meeting has been scheduled between the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Theodore Skylakakis and Jeffrey Pyatt, US Deputy Secretary of State, responsible for energy issues and former US Ambassador to Greece, during which the issue of electrical interconnection with the submarine cable Greece – Cyprus.

After all, the interest of the American state development fund Development Finance Corporation (DFC) remains stable, which will give a geopolitical security to the implementation of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), alongside the interest in participating in the equity scheme of the TAQA cable from the Emirate and French Meridiam.

The gas workshop

Regarding the discussions on the new round of common gas supplies in the EU that will take place in the framework of the workshop that will be held in a central hotel in Athens, government officials of European countries, Commission officials, gas sellers, and consumers will be sitting at the same table . Russian gas

Discussions will focus on European efforts to further de-addiction Russian gasthrough new supplies LNG. The aim of the workshop is to stimulate interest in the expression of interest as the opening of the European platform approaches, with the start of bidding set for 21 October and closing on 24 October in order to submit requests for delivery of gas quantities for the period January 2025 – March 2030.

Revythoussa and Alexandroupoli

According to information, the Greek side will attempt to ensure the movement of specific quantities through the Greek terminals of Revythoussa and the new FSRU Alexandroupolis.

After all, the issue of infrastructure availability will be a central issue in the discussions of the next two days, as well as the need to complete the vertical natural gas corridor, which aims to strengthen energy security and the diversification of natural gas supply sources in the Southeast region and of Central Europe, allowing the two-way flow of natural gas from the South to the North and, more specifically, from Greece to Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova and Ukraine, through the connection of European gas transmission infrastructures.
