Jeff Bezos’ superyacht is so huge it has to park next to tankers

Jeff Bezos may need to start accepting packages on his 127-metre superyacht, as it increasingly becomes clear that the ship is of little use for transporting the super-rich to the most luxurious ports. Photos and real-time data show the Amazon founder was forced to dock his ship next to an oil tanker while it was in port in South Florida.

Yachting blog Luxury Launches was the first to report Instagram photos showing megayacht Koru had arrived in the US and docked at Port Everglades in Florida. She reached her destination from the Mediterranean last week but had to take a berth next to two berths occupied by similarly sized tankers rather than among other large sailing ships in an affluent area of the city. According to the latest data from the Marine Traffic website, she is berthed at a berth occupied by the oil tanker Hafnia Kallang and the chemical tanker STI Texas City.

The megayacht’s $500 million price tag prevents it from fitting into the port’s tall ship space, which can accommodate vessels up to 121 meters in length. The port handles much larger ships, including cruise ships over 300 meters in length, at dedicated terminals, but Bezos’ massive yacht occupies an awkward position due to its excessive size.

Parking the Koru at this location is not cheap, but for a billionaire like Bezos, paying for the various costs of the vessel is no problem. The publication mentioned that the bill could be around $22,000 for 10 days at the port. At the same time, it is reported that Bezos is already allegedly paying $137,000 a day for the maintenance of the vessel.

“Koru” is in the background, and “Aboena” is in the foreground.

However, such an expense is a cheap solution, given the existence of the $75 million support vessel Aboena, which is intended only to enable the founder’s fiancee Lauren Sanchez to land her helicopter.

The name “Koru” comes from the Maori symbol for height, which seems to have more to do with her size than an attempt to compensate for anything. The last major scandal with a megayacht, besides the very fact of the existence of such a monster, was associated with the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where the Koningshafen Bridge had to be dismantled to help remove the ship from the port.
