Jeetoo Hospital: 21-year-old dies after assault

Akash Rye Gunness, 21 from Albion, took his last breath on Tuesday.

He had been admitted to intensive care at Jeetoo hospital in Port-Louis since December 19. Akash Rye Gunness, 21 from Albion, took his last breath on Tuesday. According to his 22-year-old cousin who was interviewed by the police as a witness, Akash Rye Gunness was attacked with a screwdriver by Joseph Floricourt Botte, alias Cola, after an argument. That day, the 53-year-old suspect living in Roche-Bois, reportedly went to Albion to meet a relative of the two young men with whom he had a romantic relationship. However, Akash Rye Gunness and his cousin reportedly asked Joseph Floricourt Botte not to come here anymore. An argument then arose and the suspect allegedly attacked Akash Rye Gunness with a screwdriver.

Joseph Floricourt Botte was arrested by police on December 21 and appeared in court for «serious assault with aggravation circumstances». During his questioning, the 50-year-old, a carpenter by trade, explained that it would be the two residents of Albion who tried to attack him. One of them had a knife. When the gun fell, he picked it up to defend himself. “I don’t know if I could hit the victim with the knife while trying to defend myself. I don’t know if I was able to reach one of them ”, Joseph Floricourt Botte told investigators in the presence of his lawyer, Me Yashraj Bhudoye. He appeared in court again yesterday following the death of Akash Rye Gunness, and this time an interim murder charge has been brought against him. The police were unable to locate the weapon that was used in the assault.

The investigation is being carried out by Albion Police headed by the Woman Police Inspector (WPI) Augustine and the Criminal Investigation d’Albion under the leadership of Inspector Thandrayen and Police Superintendent Bansoodeb.
