Let’s face it, it took some getting used to when the Jeep Avenger was unveiled at the 2022 Paris Motor Show. A fully electric Jeep would be the savior of Jeep in Europe. The iconic models with a petrol engine, such as the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee, are simply not bestsellers in Europe.
Jeep made a small concession. Only in Italy and Spain would the Avenger also come on the market with a 1.2-liter petrol engine (100 hp), because there are far too few charging stations in those countries. In all other countries, the version with plug had to do it alone.
Belgium gets a petrol Avenger
But we are not even a year further and everything has already changed. Jeep is changing course and is now also giving the largest car countries in Europe – Germany, France and the United Kingdom – a petrol Avenger. You will also soon be able to see an Avenger owner refueling E10 in Poland, just like in Belgium. Now it is suddenly the question where the Avenger is not supplied with a petrol engine.
Jeep Avenger suddenly 10,000 euros cheaper
Why does Jeep retrace its steps? Eric Laforge, the European Jeep boss, is honest. It’s a pragmatic choice, the petrol-powered Avenger can make Jeep a lot of money. An electric Jeep Avenger is relatively expensive in many European countries, the CEO was afraid that customers would leave for competing brands.
If we look at the price difference in Germany, it becomes clear what the Jeep boss means. There you pay 37,000 euros for an electric Jeep Avenger. But the buyer of a Jeep Avenger 1.2 turbo engine with 100 hp laughs a bit, because he pays exactly 10,000 euros less. The Belgians also save a lot of money if they go for the petrol Jeep Avenger; the price difference is 11,500 euros. (27,000 vs. 38,500 euros for the EV).

Jeep Avenger gasoline engine in the Netherlands
Are you ready to order a gasoline-powered Avenger, rubbing your hands? Too bad. In the Netherlands everything remains the same. We can only buy the electric Avenger, for a price of 39,500 euros. You then get an Avenger with a 156 hp electric motor, a 54 kWh battery, and a range of 400 kilometers. Cars such as the Opel Astra Electric and Citroën e-C4 also have this engine.
Jeep is not deviating from its long-term plan, according to Laforge; from 2030 it will only supply electric models in Europe.
