Haaz newspaper investigations revealed that there are large differences in tomato prices between major shopping centers in the city of Jeddah and local vegetable markets.
According to the report, the price of a kilo of tomatoes in commercial centers reaches 7.95 riyals, while the same product can be found in vegetable markets at a price ranging between 3 to 4 riyals per kilogram, reflecting a price difference of up to 125%.
Merchants and dealers explained to us that this disparity in prices is due to the additional expenses incurred by major stores, such as labor salaries and providing distinguished services to consumers.
They also pointed out that the tomatoes currently available are from last summer’s season and have been stored in refrigerators, which increases their cost.
In addition, some of these tomatoes may be imported or greenhouse-grown, which may not be of the same quality as those available in supermarkets.
For his part, Ali Al-Sarouri, one of the dealers, pointed out that vegetable markets offer lower prices compared to major stores, as the price of a kilo ranges between 3 to 4 riyals.
While Ahmed Al-Naqli, another merchant, attributes the high prices in stores to storage costs in refrigerators and transportation expenses.
Saleh Al-Zaini, another trader, emphasized that tomatoes at reduced prices may not be of the same quality as the products available in major commercial centers, stressing that quality is an important factor in determining prices, especially with regard to agricultural products.
