The members of the Electoral Board of Guatemala have filed an appeal for annulment before the Supreme Electoral Tribunal with which it is intended that the elections in the municipality of Chinautla be declared null, this after the incidents that occurred in that place.

According to the board in a statement, the riots caused local residents to take possession of the boxes containing the electoral material. After the action of the authorities and the Public Ministry, 12 boxes out of 210 that were in the Municipality could be recovered. In addition to this, there are another 33 boxes that were delivered to the Public Ministry as custody. After that, the whereabouts of the others are unknown.

Faced with this situation, the Board affirms that it cannot deliver a result of the elections in said municipality of the department of Guatemala.

The appeal was delivered last Wednesday afternoon. This after determining that the boxes containing the marked ballots and other materials that were used for the election in Chinautla are not found.

Discontent

Last Sunday the elections in Chinautla took place normally, at the end of the day it was determined that the winner again of the process was Guadalupe del Cid Medrano, niece of former mayor Arnoldo Medrano, who was re-elected in the place.

This caused the following Monday, residents of Chinautla to protest in front of the municipality, assuring that the current mayoress mobilized people to vote for her. Said protest ended in riots with the intervention of anti-riot forces of the National Civil Police, the seizure of some centers of voting and the destruction of some boxes with electoral material.

Due to this situation, they arrested 8 people, who placed them at the disposal of a competent judge, where they were fined for breaches of public order.
