Birkin, who is often described in the French media as “the English favorite of the French”, is considered an artistic icon in France, due to her career full of successes in acting and singing, as well as an inspiration for fashion designers during the past decades.
Her meeting with singer and composer Serge Gainsbourg, after she moved to Paris at the age of 20, was a pivotal stage in her career, as it was the first of a flaming musical and emotional relationship between the two that lasted 13 years.
Their joint song, “Je t’aime, moi non plus”, is still engraved in the French musical memory, as the work sparked a scandal when it was released in 1969.
After her separation from Gainsbourg in the early 1980s, Birkin married director Jacques Doyon, who directed the movie “La Piraeus”, and for her role in it she received her first three nominations for the “Cesar Awards”, which is equivalent to the “Oscar” in the United States. Birkin and Doyon’s marriage continued between 1980 and 1992.
In 2007, Birkin directed her first film, entitled “Boxes”, which was presented at a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival.
Birkin’s health has deteriorated in recent years, as she suffered a minor stroke in 2021, which forced her to cancel several commitments.
