Sunday, Jean-Michel Blanquer will become the Minister of Education who remained the longest in his post on rue de Grenelle.
Never has a Minister of National Education remained in office for so long under the Fifth Republic. This Sunday, it will be 4 years and 118 days that Jean-Michel Blanquer is Minister in charge of Education under the presidency of Emmanuel Macron. He should therefore beat, that day, the record for longevity in his ministry.
The record was previously held by Christian Fouchet (UDR), who had been Minister of Education for 4 years and 117 days in the 1960s. He remained in post in rue de Grenelle during the first Georges Pompidou government (under the presidency of Charles de Gaulle), namely between December 6, 1962 and April 1, 1967.
Jean-Michel Blanquer took over from Najat Vallaud-Belkacem on May 17, 2017, when he was appointed to Education in the first government of Édouard Philippe after the election of Emmanuel Macron. Academic and jurist before becoming a politician, Jean-Michel Blanquer was one of the figures of “civil society” dear to Emmanuel Macron. Before joining the government, he was Managing Director of Essec, the prestigious business school, since 2013.
