the essential Jean-Marc Vayssouze joined the Senate on October 2. Newly elected from rue de Vaugirard in Paris, he talks about his beginnings and his hopes for the city and Grand Cahors.
How is your installation in Paris going?
The day after the elections, I left for Paris. I’m gradually getting my bearings. My organization will allow me to be on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, in constituency in the Lot; and in Paris, the other days.
In the Senate, the upper house of our democracy, we work in pluralism, easily overcoming political divisions, without the logic of majority or opposition as in the National Assembly. Tuesday, we worked on the bill on the security of local elected officials and the protection of mayors, voted unanimously.
We audited the Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, on Wednesday, on the war in Ukraine, the departure of our troops from Africa, the situation in the Middle East. These are major topics that have a significant impact. What is happening in Israel raises the question of how we fight against terrorism, of peace processes in the world, of how to keep our democratic model alive…
What transitions at the town hall and Grand Cahors?
I resigned from my mandate as mayor of Cahors 4 or 5 days ago. On Monday, during the municipal council, a new mayor will be elected. Naturally, Jean-Luc Marx, my first deputy, has my full support. He has the same vision as me for this territory and we have built the mandate’s projects together. I will not be mayor by proxy. I worked with the confidence and support of my team, but also the staff of our two communities, and with the confidence of the Cadurcians and the stakeholders in this area.
“Let’s let things happen for the community of communes, we’ll see”
I have not yet resigned from the post of president of Grand Cahors, I am going in stages, the date of the council has not yet been set. Let’s let things happen for the community of communes, we’ll see. I am attached to its territorial cohesion, everyone must find their place there on the reasonable scale of a living area around Cahors-Pradines, with the need to rely on rurality. In recent years, we have been able to find balance.
For AMF 46, I wish to remain president, because it is complementary to my missions as senator and the association brings together all the elected officials of the Lot. For AMF Occitanie, I would like to continue, we will discuss it.
What work commission did you get?
The Foreign Affairs Committee which intervenes on geopolitics, defense and foreign policy. It fascinates me because I am a fervent defender of democracy, which is in danger around the world. It’s an opening to areas that interest me.
Beyond the committee, in the Senate, we participate in votes on laws, we can table amendments, ask questions of the government. Concerned about defending our rural territory of the Lot, I will ensure that I defend its attractiveness and support it.
How will you connect Cahors and Paris?
I will try to do it by train, already for my carbon impact, even if this is not always easy with a 5h45 journey. This will make me defend POLT and its schedules even more. But to honor my commitments on time, I would also have to fly from Brive or Blagnac.
