Jean spoke about his inspirations for the work carried out, in which he had the mission of celebrating the franchise’s fifteenth anniversary Assassin’s Creed with a return to the roots. Furthermore, he detailed the research carried out by his team to bring the setting to the Middle Eastern world without falling into stereotypes.
Day of nostalgia like Mirage
This is Jean-Luc’s first time in the Assassin’s Creed series, and his mission was to return the game to a formula similar to the first entries in the franchise. The art director says that nostalgia was one of the great motivators in creating the world of Mirage.
According to Jean-Luc, the first games served as inspiration, but the art team didn’t look at them with the intention of reproducing scene by scene. The production process had a more creative aspect in this sense.
“I didn’t play the first game to look and choose things. I wanted to look and choose things from my memory, things that reminded me of the first game, even if that in the first one wasn’t good. My intention with Mirage was to bring a feeling of nostalgia “Jean analyzed.
He comments that the city of Baghdad had to be very well refined historically and visually, and this was the direction of development. As for gameplay, the mission was to talk to older Assassin’s Creed fans.
“The rest (of the game) needed to remind people why they love it. Remind people that they love the killer in white, that they love jumping from rooftop to rooftop. Every aspect that was iconic to the franchise needed to come back, and The entire team, not just me, are fans of the franchise and old enough to have played the first Assassin’s Creed games.”
Respect Islamic culture

Assassin’s Creed Mirage takes place mainly in Baghdad in 861 AD, a time that is considered the Golden Age of Islam. Therefore, Jean-Luc and his team took extra care to bring this culture to the game, since the Middle East is often reproduced in pop culture with various stereotypes.
“I grew up in the Middle East, in Iran, and I left the country when I was eleven. So, as I was looking at my memories of the first game, I was also looking at my memories as a kid growing up in that place. It helped me a lot to know what is right and wrong. I’m not from Arab culture, but I lived close enough to understand some aspects”account.
But just childhood memories would not be enough to do respectful work with the Middle East. Therefore, Jean-Luc assembled a team prepared to do the work and ensure that there were no mistakes when presenting the culture.
“The people consulted for the game came with a wish list of things to do. We didn’t want to err on the side of any aspect of cultural appropriation or Eastern behaviors. Celebrating the Islamic world is not an easy thing, and we wanted to bring justice to this world by way it is reappropriated in some types of entertainment.”
Assassin’s Creed Mirage was released in early October and is available for PC, Xbox Series and PlayStation 5.
