PEOPLE – It’s last summer. During a municipal council meeting in Montigny-lès-Metz in Moselle, the deputy mayor, Dimitri Sokolowski, hums a tune by Jean-Jacques Goldman, tell The Parisian this Sunday, November 12.

“Like you, like you, like you… Her name was Sarah and she wasn’t 8 years old…”then sings the chosen one, when the destiny of a family is mentioned during the session.

Along with their mother, Georgette, Lucienne and Denise Bernard were deported to Auschwitz in 1944 when they were little girls. To pay tribute to them, the town of Montigny-lès-Metz had Stolpersteine, metal paving stones, engraved, intended to soon be placed in front of their final resting place.

A response ten days later

“When I quoted the words when talking about the three of them, the idea came to me to write to Jean-Jacques Goldman to invite him to the tribute ceremony, scheduled for the weekend of November 18. A bit like a bottle in the sea, with a little cheek but without really believing in it. Ten days later he responded ”, says Dimitri Sokolowski Parisian.

On a business card with his name on it, Jean-Jacques Goldman greeted this “touching invitation”. Unfortunately for the Moselle commune, he will not be able to honor it. The singer, however, complimented the city’s memorial work, recalling his own family history.
