Jean Bontoux: Remembering An Emblematic Figure of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Avignon | Tribute, Accomplishments, and Legacy

An emblematic figure of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Avignon passed away in July.

Jean Bontoux, director of public schools in the village from 1954 to 1984, creator of the sporting star blood and gold rugby school died on July 19, 2023 at the Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne retirement home in his 93rd year.

Knight of the Academic Palms, Knight of Sports Merit and silver medalist for National Education, Jean Bontoux was from the Hautes-Alpes.

Married to Odile, also a teacher in Saint-Saturnin-lès-Avignon, he had a son Pierre as well as two granddaughters. Passionate about walking, history and heritage, Jean Bontoux loved rugby and his beloved oval ball to which he devoted a large part of his leisure time.

In recent years, he had been honored by the municipality for his investment and the love he had for his village. In 2018, the City medal was awarded to him and then in November 2021, a vibrant tribute was paid to him at the Laffont stadium during the inauguration of the rugby side stand which now bears his name.

A religious ceremony will be given in his memory this Wednesday, July 26 at 10 a.m. in the parish church. After the cremation, Jean Bontoux will rest in the small cemetery of Ballons (Drôme).
