A 69-year-old man was sentenced on Friday by the Maine-et-Loire Assize Court for attempting to poison his wife. In May 2019, in Avrillé, north of Angers, the accused had poured Lexomil, a bromazepam from the anxiolytic class, into his wife’s orange juice, reports West France.
He then contacted the emergency services and made believe in a suicide attempt. The victim, 62 years old at the time of the events, had survived, and had contradicted the statements of her husband.
Twelve years in prison
Before the Assize Court, the man admitted the facts. He explained that he did so to “calm down” his wife who wanted to file for divorce. The latter described a jealous man suffering from alcohol problems.
The prosecution, who spoke of a “sneaky crime”, required fifteen years in prison. The defendant was finally sentenced, after two days of hearing, to a 12-year prison term.
