JD Vance on US migration: We must stop the bleeding – 2024-08-12 23:14:04

The first thing to do is stop the bleeding, Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance said on Sunday, defending the plan to mass deport immigrants if Donald Trump returns to power.

During an interview with ABC, the Ohio senator suggested “let’s start with a million. That’s where Kamala Harris has failed, and then we can go from there.”

That was how he explained when asked how he and Trump would achieve their stated goal of mass deportation of some 20 million immigrants, something experts called a nightmare. He said he would take a “sequential approach” and start “with what can be done.”

“I think if you deport a lot of violent criminals and, frankly, if you make it harder to hire illegal labor, which undermines the wages of American workers, I think you’re going a long way toward solving the problem of illegal immigration,” he said.

Trump outlined from the beginning of his electoral campaign that he would focus on the immigration issue and as the contest progressed his discourse on the subject became stronger.

The former president (2017-2021) plans mass arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants if he regains the White House, because “the first thing to do is stop the bleeding” and “stop the open border,” Vance stressed.

He also called for “really re-implementing the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy, rebuilding or finishing Donald Trump’s border wall” and, according to the politician, “if you’re not willing to deport a lot of people, you’re not willing to have a border.”

In the interview on This Week, Vance reiterated his past comments about women and childless families, something that has earned him no small amount of criticism.

Vance has drawn criticism for his repeated judgments about childless Americans, including one during a July 2021 conversation with then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson in which Vance described top Democrats, including Harris, as “childless cats.”

Regarding the presidential race, despite how close it has been since Vice President Harris assumed the Democratic nomination, the senator emphasized that he and Trump are “extremely confident” in their chances of winning the November 5 elections.

“I think we’re going to win. I also think we have to work as hard as we can during the rest of the election to try to persuade Americans to vote for us,” he stressed.
