Jazzpote Festival: A Deepening Session for Jazz Enthusiasts at the Thionville Conservatory

“One, two, three and four! says Michael Cuvillon, professor of artistic education in the jazz department of the Nancy Conservatory. His students for the week begin to play chords in rhythm, which they perfect over the course of the session. They are six on the saxophone during this deepening session at the conservatory of Thionville. Everyone has their own instrument, which they must bring to the lesson and their score so that they can all play together.

This course is in fact addressed to people who have been practicing jazz for a few years, open to all. “We come here to confirm our level, knowing that the teachers will be able to give us tips so that we can work throughout the year,” rejoices one of the students.

Teenagers and older alike, they all come together for the same taste for this musical genre. The most experienced players do not hesitate to offer advice to those in more difficulty when a chord sounds out of tune or a passage in the score is too complicated.

“I already feel a good progression,” says Michael after an hour of chord rehearsals.

Jazz is back in fashion

This year in Thionville marks the last edition of the Jazzpote festival, partner of the event. Patrick Thill, president of the Anatole Jazz association and elected representative of Kuntzig, has already seen an increase in attendance, from around ten registered last year to seventeen participants in 2023.

“Jazz finds more and more of its audience today, especially among young people,” he says. It is a source of pride to be the first to offer this course in Lorraine, when it already exists everywhere in France”.

In the evening, “jams”, where several musicians take part to create musical sessions, were organized in Thionville. It was possible to find guitars, drums, double basses, and of course, saxophones. Priority to trainees but interested musicians were also able to try it!
