JAKARTA – Mission developments Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) is again hampered. The reason is, this aircraft made by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has entered a period of inactivity.
This happened because the SLIM landing area was covered in night. JAXA said that their lander was not designed for the lunar night period. Therefore, SLIM will lose its functionality for two weeks.
By entering dormancy for the second time, there is a possibility that SLIM will not be able to wake up again and operate as it should. However, JAXA will attempt to wake SLIM after the lunar night period ends.
“Even though SLIM was not designed for harsh lunar night conditions, we plan to try operating again starting mid-February, when the Sun shines again on SLIM’s solar cells,” JAXA said via its official social media.
In fact, JAXA tried to activate the SLIM communicator on Thursday, February 1. However, the results were still nil because SLIM did not respond and still did not want to operate at night.
“We sent an order (on February 1) to reactivate the SLIM communicator as a precaution, but without a response, we confirmed SLIM had entered an inactive state,” the space agency explained.
Currently, JAXA has to wait until the night period ends. At least, before the SLIM lander entered a period of inactivity, the aircraft shared the last image showing the Shioli crater. This image can be examined in more depth by JAXA.
