The verbal crisis between the government of Javier Milei and that of Pedro Sánchez in Spain reveals several issues. One of them is a determining feature of Milei’s foreign policy: the President prefers to maintain personal relationships with politicians from other countries with those who share an ideological position, it does not matter if they are in the government or in the opposition.
The two most notable cases of this situation are Spain and the United States.
In the first case, it can be seen with the contrast between the mutual antipathy that the libertarian and the socialist maintain and the open sympathy that Milei and Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox and extreme opponent of Sánchez, profess. “@Santi_ABASCAL there I will be with you again dear FRIEND…!!! LONG LIVE FUCKING FREEDOM…!!!”, wrote the President on May at the Vistalegre Palace, Madrid.
Milei will go to Spain and He did not request a meeting with either the President of the Government or King Felipe VI., which has surprised the entire Spanish political spectrum. Milei’s support for Abascal greatly bothered Spanish socialism and made the center-right of the Popular Party uncomfortable.
Milei did something similar in February when he traveled to Washington to support a summit of conservatives and ultraconservatives. There he hugged Donald Trump and wished him victory over Joe Biden in the November presidential elections. That photo, of course, greatly surprised the White House.
Biden’s strategy is different from that of his Spanish counterpart. The Democrats sent a battery of officials to Buenos Aires (the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the head of the CIA, William Burns, the head of the Southern Command of the United States, Laura Richardson), they sent a coast guard and an aircraft carrier and they sell planes and armored vehicles in order to guarantee a greater alliance with Argentina. They chose not to act offended.
This Sunday Milei will be seen in Los Angeles with several businessmen who are among Biden’s most critical. This trip also shows another fact: the President prefers to take private trips to places where they praise his figurethey give him prizes for conference spaces and to promote his books before making official visits as president of the entire Argentine Republic.

The trip to Los Angeles will be Milei’s fourth trip to the United States since he became President. In the first he went to see the grave of a revered rabbi of the ultra-Orthodox, who supported him in the presidential election campaign. In the second, she went to the summit where she met Trump. And then he was in Miami, where the Orthodox Jewish community gave him the title of “Ambassador of Light”, and in Texas, where he met his admired Elon Musk.
