Monterrey (Mexico), Feb 10 (EFE) .- The Rayados de Monterrey coach, Javier Aguirre, assured this Wednesday that the Concacaf Champions League will be a priority for his team and he will assume it with all due respect.
“With the utmost seriousness, whoever the rival is, we owe ourselves to an institution. We will go with everything to the competition; in all of them, Monterrey has the obligation to reach the final, and we will seek that,” said the strategist.
The Rayados de Aguirre will make their debut in April in the round of 16 against the Dominican Atlético Pantoja, a team with little history, but the strategist indicated that they will take the series with responsibility and arrive at it well prepared.
“Today we take a break from the issue of the draw, but we will investigate to get reports from this team. We train tomorrow, thinking about the match in Torreón, but of course we give it importance,” he added.
With one game pending, Monterrey adds four victories and a draw in the Mexican Clausura and appears in second place with 10 units, the same as the leader Toluca; On Sunday he will visit Santos Laguna, fifth in the table, in Torreón, after which Aguirre will begin to think about the ‘Concachampions’.
“The challenge is greater because behind us there are several titles, our commitment is to move forward. It is a major challenge and we take it with great confidence,” he said.
Monterrey has been the winningest team in the Concacaf in recent years, with four titles in the last 10 Champions Leagues, plus two third places in the Club World Cup.
The former Mexican coach and former Atlético de Madrid coach explained that by taking over the Rayados, he did so with the mentality of winning everything possible and this year, along with the league, he will seek to win the regional tournament.
“Since I arrived here, the directive about the seriousness to be given to the tournament was very clear. It is about Monterrey continuing to grow internationally and we will try to continue in this competition,” he concluded.
