Joseph wins in the last reason
Jason Joseph wins the 110 m hurdles race with a new Swiss record.
The athletics elite of the world meet at Weltklasse Zürich in the Letzigrund. But this time there was a bigger superstar among the spectators – and he’s still Swiss. Roger Federer (42) did the honors. And he must have liked what the retired tennis pro saw at the Diamond League meeting.
The women’s 100m was won by world champion Sha’Carri Richardson in 10.88s, with Mujinga Kambundji fourth in 11.08s. Before the start, the Swiss audience enthusiastically cheered the native of Bern, who had not had an easy season due to foot problems.
Surprise by Mujinga
The 31-year-old surprised the fans: She also started over 200 m, although that wasn’t actually planned. «The idea of the double start came to us on Wednesday. We already discussed it after the World Cup. And today I was fine after the 100 and it had room in the 200. The time is good, I’m satisfied,” she said on SRF. Kambundji was fourth in 22.46s, with World Champion Shericka Jackson taking the win in 21.82s.
Mujinga Kambundji’s sister Ditaji competed in the 100m hurdles. But there was no match against world champion Danielle Williams (12.54 s), the Swiss finished sixth in 12.73 s.
Flicker and fall
The three-time gold medalist from Budapest, sprinter Noah Lyles, also won over 200 m. It wasn’t a world record, but it was 19.80 s. The Swiss William Reais was eighth in 20.66 s.
There was a special interruption at the start of the men’s 1500 m race: the start had to be canceled because four speedsters ran onto the racetrack. But they were quickly caught by security personnel, hissed at by the audience and taken away by security.
There was a moment of shock at the end with the 4×100 m relay. The Swiss and the Dutch fought for victory. Melissa Gutschmidt fell on the finish line, so Switzerland was only second.
Three Swiss victories
Decathlete Simon Ehammer wanted to redeem himself for the disappointment at the World Cup. The Appenzeller didn’t succeed as he wished, he only finished sixth with 7.97 m. World champion Miltiadis Tentoglou won the competition with his last attempt at 8.20 m.
The audience was able to admire a total of three Swiss victories. “It was time to break the record. Running such a great race is the best medicine after the disappointment at the World Cup,” said sprinter Jason Joseph, who finished his race over 110 m hurdles in 13.08 s, setting a new Swiss record.
Marcel Hug, the “Swiss Silver Bullet”, won the wheelchair race over 1500 m. And the 26-year-old Géraldine Frey from Zug won the 100 m heat in 11.25 s. However, these three races do not count towards the Diamond League standings.
