Jason Kelk passed away after 14 months in the hospital. In all likelihood, he is the corona patient who has been in the intensive care unit of a British hospital the longest. Kelk was admitted on March 31, 2020 and did not leave the ward until Friday, June 18. He was transferred to a palliative care facility where he died surrounded by family.
His wife Sue (63) said he had wanted it that way. “He didn’t think life in the machines was life. It was his decision to stop the treatments. And I think that’s a very brave decision on his part,” she said. “But of course we are left broken.”
In addition to the coronavirus, Kelk also had type II diabetes and asthma. That’s probably why the coronavirus had such a devastating effect on his body. His lungs and liver were severely affected. There was still hope in March that he would survive there. The man was then able to breathe on his own for two weeks. In May, however, he contracted two infections from which he did not recover.
“The antibiotics did their job, but his fighting spirit was gone. He just wanted it to end,” Sue said. “I think I’ve been taking this scenario into account since the beginning, but it’s still a big blow. He was my soul mate and I will miss his humor so much.”
