Jaron Siewert takes it with humor. “We have an empty seat on the bench, so the big players can spread out a bit,” says the Foxes coach with a slight wink. Because – and the 29-year-old is well aware of this – in contrast to the next opponent SC Magdeburg, the squad of the Berliners has grown bigger and on the other hand it is currently not quite as broad as he might wish.
Nevertheless, Siewert has a good feeling before the two clubs meet in the Schmelinghalle on Wednesday in the Handball Bundesliga (8:30 p.m. / DYN). “We are a tight-knit team. Everyone knows how to fulfill their role,” says the Berliner, describing the strength of his team. “It’s also our first home game. We can score with emotions and the atmosphere.”
This season we have a new chance
Jaron Siewerttrainer of foxes
Points are exactly the right keyword, because Siewert has not yet been able to get them against SCM in his coaching career. His sports director Stefan Kretzschmar, whose likeness shines in the Magdeburg Hall of Fame, was able to witness the last victory in February 2020. Since then, however, both have had to hold back against their favorite rival from the Elbe. “It’s not in my head,” says Siewert nevertheless. “This is now a small dry spell that should not be overestimated. We have a new chance this season.”
The fact that the Champions League winners are now one of the best Magdeburg teams of recent years, who have once again strengthened themselves in the backcourt with Felix Claar, Albin Lagergren and Janus Smarason, does not make it any easier. In the most recent game of the Magdeburg team, Kretzschmar, in his function as a television expert, almost went into raptures and spoke of an “impressive early form” that Bennet Wiegert’s team was showing. “There’s obviously the motivation magician on the sidelines who gets everyone on track,” said the 50-year-old. “I don’t think they need to put so much effort into scouting the players. You could send a cucumber to Magdeburg, it would also outperform.”
Foxes trainer Siewert has a few tactical ideas
The fact that Wiegert has not put together a group of cucumbers, but an 18-man star ensemble of European handball, from which he is allowed to sort out before each game, does not make the task easier for the Berliners. “It’s hard to find weaknesses. They have a good flow of play, are consistent in finishing and are compact in defence,” admits Siewert. Tactically, however, he has a few ideas to challenge the opponent. For example, the defense that has grown smaller should be played off with the help of long-distance throws.
“I don’t think they need to put so much effort into scouting the players. You could send a cucumber to Magdeburg, it would also outperform.”
Foxes Board of Sports Stefan Kretzschmar about SC Magdeburg
A task that specifically affects Lasse Andersson. Because from the Berlin back row he is the one who is most likely to look for the end of ten meters. But it’s the same for him, who recently scored only four of his ten shots in goal in Stuttgart, and at the start in Leipzig he scored nine goals in 15 attempts. “There is still room for improvement in terms of chance evaluation, but he also has to take the shots,” says Siewert. “He knows we trust him and he knows what we expect of him.”

Again and again on Mondays TV atmosphere is only half the battle Successful start Foxes start the season with a win in Leipzig Foxes start the competitive game in Berlin Confidence thanks to a stable axis
However, that should apply to pretty much every player in the foxes. Because Andersson alone will not be able to fix it. And: “You should always win the goalkeeper duel, you should always win the speed duel. Then things look pretty good in a game like that,” says Siewert, who, alongside first-choice goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev, can once again rely on Viktor Kireev between the posts. With this, Jaron Siewert can at least fill up the bank a little.
