Juraj Slafkovský turned 20 today. His teenage period was very successful, but Jaromír Jágr points to a possible problem in his development in Montreal.
Even in the draft year, Slafkovský was compared to Jágr by Vladimír Vůjtek, Peter Forsberg and finally Jágr himself.
“We can try to compare him to the best European in history – Jard Jágr. I knew him in the Slafkovski years and he also had such a figure. He had similar thinking, insight, he understood the puck,” said Vůjtek.
“He can cover the puck brilliantly with his big figure, which reminds me of Jágra,” Peter Forsberg told Denník N.
“I turned on the TV and Juraj Slafkovský was with the puck at the goalkeeper. He was very strong. I say to myself, ‘this one plays in a similar style to me. I want that in the team.’ And then I found out that he was 17 years old,” Jágr said two years ago.
Jágr spoke about Slafkovski again a few weeks ago. IN conversation for the Šport newspaper, he compared Slafkovský’s beginnings in the NHL with his own and said that Slafkovský doesn’t have much to learn from in Montreal.
Jágro’s entire answer was as follows: “It was different for me. I was drafted from the fifth place, but I started in the fourth formation. I had a lot of great players in the team that I could learn from. I don’t think Montreal has that kind of hockey players.
Pittsburgh had a loaded roster at the time, and we won the Stanley Cup right away. There were really excellent players in the team. Sometimes it is good for a young player to play in a club where he has great hockey players around him and has the opportunity to learn from them.
The worst thing is when you are one of the best there from the start. Then who should you learn from? It’s like coming to school and there’s no teacher. That won’t give you much either.’
