Japiņš, who is a former cyclist, coach, as well as businessman and competition organizer, has been working as the president of the LFR since the autumn of 2012.
“This is not a spontaneous decision. I had already decided that eight years is enough time for this position, and I informed my colleagues about this decision some time ago,” said Japiņš.
In the previous presidential election in 2016, Japiņš won 39 votes and won the right to hold another four-year term, but 18 votes were cast for the second candidate, Lauri Spiller.
The general meeting of the members of the Latvian Cycling Federation – elections – is scheduled for November 20, 2020.
A presidential candidate or LRF member who nominates a presidential candidate must submit a written application to the Secretary General of the LRF for candidacy, consent to hold the presidency, autobiography and development program and priority period from 2020 to 2024 by October 8.
