Japan’s Space Missions XRISM and SLIM: Objectives and Launch Details

PRONUSANTARA.COM – Japan, as one of the leading countries in space exploration, has launched two important missions, namely the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) and the Smart Lander for Lunar Investigation (SLIM).

With this launch, Japan is trying to become the fifth country in the world to successfully land on the moon early next year. Let’s look at the details and objectives of these two missions.

Space Mission Launch

The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) was the driving force behind the launch of these two missions.

They used a domestically made rocket, H-IIA, to take this spacecraft to the moon.

This rocket took off from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan.

XRISM successfully separated from the launch vehicle about 14 minutes and 9 seconds after launch, while SLIM, nicknamed the “Moon Sniper”, separated about 47 minutes and 33 seconds after launch.

This mission faced three delays due to unfavorable weather.

However, the spirit of JAXA and its team remains unwavering in achieving their goals.

SLIM Mission Objectives

Japan has big ambitions to land SLIM within 100 meters of its target location on the lunar surface.

The $100 million mission is expected to begin landing in February after a long, fuel-efficient approach.

JAXA President Hiroshi Yamakawa stated that the big goal of the SLIM mission was to prove high-accuracy landings.

They want to achieve ‘landing where we want’ on the lunar surface, not ‘landing where we can’.
