Former Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida has won the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) internal vote for the party’s leadership and will become the country’s next prime minister because the party has a majority in parliament. Chisida will be formally appointed Head of Government, becoming the country’s 100th Prime Minister, on 4 October with an extraordinary parliamentary session.

The species was unable to get into Prime Minister Abe’s shoes

A year ago, 64-year-old Kishida lost in a similar vote to Yoshihidi Sugam, but is now replacing him as LDP leader and prime minister, where Suga was only one year old. After the resignation of Prime Minister Shindzo Abes due to health conditions after nearly eight years of rule, the longest period in Japan’s post-war history, his successor, Yoshihide Suga, was unable to get into the prime minister’s shoes, the Associated Press notes. Chisinau’s first task will be to unite and lead the LDP in general elections, which are due in two months.

The LDP’s popularity plummeted when Prime Minister Suga decided to host the Tokyo Olympics, despite the threat of a pandemic against a large portion of Japanese society. The new prime minister will face a number of difficult challenges, including recovering the country’s economy, the world’s third largest, following the constraints of the Covid pandemic and strengthening defense against the threat of North Korea. Kishida called for the establishment of a “health crisis management agency” to deal with the pandemic and supported a motion for a resolution condemning China’s treatment of the Uighur minority. “My skill is to listen to the people,” Kishida said after winning the party vote. “I am committed to working with everyone on an open LDP and a bright future for Japan,” he added.

Chisinau calls for ‘new growth capitalism’

Chisida was first elected to parliament in 1993 and became a defender of nuclear disarmament. As Foreign Minister of the Shindzo Abes government in 2015, he participated in reaching an agreement with South Korea to resolve a dispute over sexual violence against Korean women by Japanese soldiers during World War II. This heavy burden of history still overshadows relations between the two countries. Chisida is known as a moderately liberal politician and could shift the ruling Conservative Party a little to the left, notes the BBC.

Although critics call him boring, in competition with four candidates, Chisinau was able to secure the support of the party’s leadership majority. He has promised to take a critical look at the economic policy of former Prime Minister Shindzo Abe, which has only benefited the rich. Chisida has called for a “new capitalism of growth” to reduce income disparities between different sections of society, which emerged during the reign of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and deepened during the pandemic. He also promised to promote clean energy technologies to preserve the environment and prevent temperature rises.

Condemns the visit of the Russian Prime Minister to the Kuril Islands

Japan has opposed the visit of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to the Kuril Islands this summer. Moscow rejected Japan’s protest and stressed that the Kuril Islands were Russian territory. In 1945, the southern part of the Kuril Islands, occupied by the Soviet army, is still considered by Japan to be its Northern Territories. Tokyo claims the islands of Iturup, Kunashir, Shicotan and Habomai, referring to the bilateral 1855 Treatise on Trade and Borders. Moscow believes that Russia’s sovereignty over the South Kuril Islands is unquestionable. These differences continue to hamper the demarcation of the border and the conclusion of a peace agreement after the Second World War.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to Tokyo to protest against Michustin’s visit, but the Russian Foreign Ministry filed a complaint with the Japanese ambassador. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov, in a meeting with a Japanese diplomat, has criticized Japan’s “unfriendly steps”.

Japan will continue its partnership with the United States

According to analysts, as the election approaches, voters will pay attention to how Chisinau intends to balance Japan’s relations with the United States and China. In his address to the party’s deliberations, Kishida promised to address Japan’s “national crises”, including Covid-19, the economic downturn, the demographic crisis, and to provide a “free and open India-Pacific region” as a counterweight to China’s excessive demands.

Chisida has accused China of wanting to export “its authoritarian system”. Once considered indecisive, the moderate has now called for a further increase in the national defense budget and vowed not to compromise on China’s dispute over “de facto” independent Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory, and Beijing’s crackdown on the democracy movement in Hong Kong.

According to experts, under the leadership of Chisinau, Japan will continue a close security partnership with the United States and other democracies in Asia and Europe as a counterweight to China and a nuclear-jerking North Korea. Analysts point out that in the difficult geopolitical situation in the world, it is very important that political stability and succession remain in Japan.
