ANTARIKSA — Japan’s robotic spacecraft, SLIM, will try to land on the surface of the moon tonight, Friday, January 19 2024. The first landing made by the land of the rising sun will be broadcast live via official broadcast.
The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) is scheduled to begin landing operations at 10 am EST or 22.00 WIB tonight. A soft landing on the moon occurs 20 minutes later, if all goes according to plan.
Those of you who want to watch it can watch the broadcast live on the official YouTube of the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) on this page. The broadcast will start at 21.00 WIB.
SLIM was launched aboard a Japanese H-2A rocket on September 6, 2023. The lunar probe shared its launch with an X-ray space telescope called XRISM, which was deployed to low Earth orbit shortly after its flight. Recently, he sent his first test photo after a successful checkout period.

SLIM took a long, energy-efficient path to the moon, and finally arrived in orbit around Earth’s closest neighbor on December 25, 2023. The spacecraft then spent three weeks preparing for landing day, which is now almost here.
If everything goes according to plan on Friday, SLIM will land within 100 meters of the target point on the rim of the moon’s Shioli Crater. The goal is to demonstrate the technology required to make a proper landing.
“The SLIM mission architecture hopes to change the standard of lunar landing missions, from landing where it is easy to landing exactly where you want it,” the non-profit Planetary Society wrote in its mission description.

Tonight’s success will lead Japan to become a very exclusive club of space explorers. To date, only four countries, the Soviet Union, the United States, China, and India have performed soft landings on the moon. Source: Space.com
