Japan’s Moon Sniper SLIM Successfully Lands on Moon, 5th Country to Achieve Historic Feat

In its statement, the Space Exploration Agency (JAXA) updated the space travel information of the “Smart Landing Vehicle for Exploring the Moon” (SLIM), nicknamed “Moon Sniper”.

It was reported that the SLIM vehicle successfully landed on the Moon at 00.20 local time on January 20, but its battery ran out after 2 hours and 40 minutes.

It was reported that the built-in solar panels in the vehicle could not produce energy because they were not facing the sun, and thus the battery could not be charged.

It was stated that the vehicle, whose other functions are working, can be restarted by charging it with the reflection of the Sun’s rays to the west of the Moon.

IT BECAME THE 5TH COUNTRY

National media reported over the weekend that Japan was the 5th country to succeed in landing on the Moon, after the Soviet Union, the USA, China and India.

The H2A rocket carrying SLIM was sent into space from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima in the southwest at the end of September.

JAXA had announced that the SLIM vehicle was expected to provide an “unprecedentedly high-precision landing” on the Moon.

The lander, produced by Mitsubishi Electric, weighs 700 kilograms, has a height of 2.4 meters and a width of 2.7 meters.

The aim is for the vehicle to be able to move on the Moon’s surface using a sphere-shaped probe slightly larger than a tennis ball.
