Japan aims to become the fifth country to land a spacecraft on the moon, when they will attempt a precision landing on Friday (19/1).

The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) belonging to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is equipped with high-precision technology and is capable of detecting water and testing the habitability of humans on the moon.

Tokyo is increasingly seeking to advance its role in space with the cooperation of the United States, to respond to China’s military and technological power.

But JAXA has faced setbacks in its rocket development, including the failed launch of its H3 rocket, March 2023.

JAXA has landed on small asteroids twice, but landing on the moon was considered more difficult due to differences in gravity.

SLIM will also deploy two mini rover probes that will take images of the spacecraft.
