◀ Anchor ▶

As Japan eventually discharges contaminated water, political battles are intensifying.

In the National Assembly, opposition lawmakers criticized the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries for measures to protect our fishermen.

Regarding this, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Cho Seung-hwan said, “Japan’s decision to release the fish is an inevitable choice,” and said to Korean fishermen, “There will be no direct damage.”

Reporter Son Ha-neul covered the story.

The opposition party poured out criticism for not showing any proper measures or strategies to protect fishermen even though the discharge of contaminated water became a reality.

″We only use the government budget to create and use publicity materials, but we do not have any countermeasures against our fishermen.″

[김승남/더불어민주당 의원]

″Aren’t you predicting direct or indirect damage to our country’s fishermen?″

[조승환/해양수산부 장관]

″I don’t think there will be any direct damage.″

It was also pointed out that there are countermeasures against the fact that the discharge of contaminated water for decommissioning of nuclear power plants may take longer than the Japanese government’s expected 30 years.

″Will this be over in 30 years?″

″Yes, in terms of emissions planning, we know that.″

″Then, when Japan next says, “Ah, it must be 50 years,” will it end in 50 years then?″

The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries explained that he had all plans for thorough inspection of marine products, promotion of consumption, purchase and stockpiling, and financial support, but he provoked strong opposition from the opposition party with answers that seemed to be quoting or covering Japan’s position.

″I think Japan’s decision is an inevitable choice. As a responsible member of the international community, I think this is a position I have no choice but to admit.”

In the name of all members of the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party proposed the “Special Act on Prohibition of Imports of Seafood Products Exposed to Contaminated Water and Promotion of the Fisheries Industry,” and urged the strengthening of the ban on imports of fishery products from Japan and the expansion of exports of Korean fishery products.

The Democratic Party announced a large-scale street march from Gwanghwamun to the Yongsan Presidential Office tomorrow, and the power of the people also decided to inspect safety management in Busan, where Japanese seafood comes in.

On the other hand, ″Former President Moon Jae-in will know that there is virtually no effect on the Korean sea even if Japan discharges contaminated water. , I think the government’s response to this issue is also very wrong.”
