A Japanese taxi driver has been arrested for killing a pigeon. The fifty-year-old driver deliberately drove into a flight of pigeons walking on the road in the capital Tokyo. One of the animals did not survive.
According to Japanese media, the taxi driver quickly drove away after a traffic light turned green. He drove into the pigeons at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour. According to veterinarians, one of the animals died from the “traumatic shock” of the incident.
In Japan, pigeons are heavily protected. They may only be killed if they demonstrably cause damage or danger. In addition, permission from the local government is required.
According to police, the man “used his car to kill a pigeon, even though it posed no risk.” The taxi driver is suspected of violating laws aimed at protecting wildlife. The police call the man’s action “very malicious”.
The man believes he has done nothing wrong, report it Japanese media. “Roads are for people, it’s up to the pigeons to avoid cars,” he reportedly told police.
