Japanese submarine can no longer dive after colliding with ship in Pacific Ocean

Because the antenna was damaged in the collision, the crew members had to report the incident with their mobile phone. Submarine Soryu can still sail, but no longer dive, reports CNN.

Soryu, 84 meters long, was on a training mission off the coast of Shikoku Island. Although the crew could still see the freighter coming through the periscope, the submarine was no longer able to swerve in time.

Not noticed

“As the Soryu surfaced, it scraped past the other vessel,” said Japanese defense minister Nobuo Kishi. “It is extremely unfortunate that the submarine collided with a commercial ship.”

Three people on board the submarine were injured, according to the Japanese government. Cargo ship Ocean Artemis, registered in Hong Kong, would not have noticed the collision and was not damaged.
