Japan’s Inokashira Park zoo has launched an investigation into the deaths of 31 of the 40 Japanese squirrels that lived there. Zookeepers may have given the squirrels the wrong medicine.
The animals received an injection more than a week ago to prevent infections with parasites. Pesticides against insects were also sprayed over the squirrels’ nest boxes. Shortly afterwards the first squirrel died, and by Monday the death toll had risen to 31.
“The possibility that the animals were poisoned cannot be ruled out,” the Tokyo zoo said on Monday. “We are investigating the cause of death and are closely monitoring the surviving squirrels.”
The zoo has apologized. The Japanese squirrel occurs naturally in large parts of Japan.
