According to a report by Japan’s Kyodo News Agency on the 28th, scientific research institutions such as universities in the Nara region of Japan recently announced the development of a “magical plant” that can glow in the dark.

Taku Demura, a professor at Nara Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, announced on the 26th that they have developed a plant “luminous tree” with a luminous mushroom gene. That day, the researchers showed a poplar tree about 1 meter high. This tree emits green light in the dark, not because of other light, but because it emits light on its own. According to Demura, if the plant is programmed with fluorescent proteins from jellyfish and the like, it will be able to emit stronger light. Through different combinations of proteins, green, red, and blue light can also be emitted.

Demura said that this plant is expected to be used for indoor lighting and sidewalk lighting that do not require electricity. “We expect this plant to attract attention as a lighting facility that does not burden the environment.” (Overseas Network Wang Shanning)
