Japanese researchers propose robot that can peel bananas | Tech

In Japan, researchers have developed a robot that can pick up and peel a banana without crushing the fruit. That writes Reuters.

The two-armed robot was taught the technique through deep imitation learning. Heecheol Kim, Yoshiyuki Ohmura and Yasuo Kuniyoshi, the researchers at the University of Tokyo, demonstrated the peeling motion hundreds of times to produce enough data for the robot. In this way, the robot learned the task and could repeat it. The team trained the robot for 13 hours.

In 57 percent of the attempts, the robot was able to pick up and peel a banana in about three minutes, without crushing the fruit. According to Kuniyoshi, this training method would allow robots to perform various simple human tasks. The team also says that this indicates that robots will in the future be able to do more than just move parts around a factory. Better trained robots could alleviate the labor shortage in Japan in this way, Kuniyoshi said.
