Japanese railways tested a new, twice as fast shinkansen

Today, the Japanese railway company JR Central presented a test drive of the new Shinkansen high-speed train, which works on the principle of magnetic levitation. As a result, it reaches speeds of up to 500 kilometers per hour, which is almost double the speed of current models. This was reported by the Kyoto Agency. The train will run between Tokyo and Osaka after the track is completed.

The first part of the project, connecting Tokyo and Nagoya, should be put into operation in 2027. The new express train should cover a distance of 286 kilometers in 40 minutes instead of the current hour and a half. It has been tested since August, on a test track in central Japan.

Trains run on a magnetic cushion, with about 86 percent of the line running underground. “There are many tunnels on the planned line, so we have lightened the interior of the trains and improved the comfort,” said a representative of the railway company.

However, regional governments and residents of central Shizuoka Prefecture have objections to the line. He is therefore trying to persuade the operator not to give up the plans and not to operate the route between Tokyo and Nagoya in 2027. In 2045, these high-speed trains should also connect Tokyo and Osaka.
