Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Emperor’s Nephew Japan, Princess Mako will remain married to her partner who is an ordinary civilian, Kei Komuro even though the public is against it. They will get married tomorrow, Tuesday (26/10).
A few days before the event was held, Komuro cut his ponytail. Several Japanese tabloids ran photos of Komuro from every angle and compared him to the Samurai figure.
On social media, netizens supported his new look, but some netizens also said it was not suitable for a royal groom.
The ponytail has no meaning in the West and does not make the public noisy. But it’s different in Japan.
According to professor of women’s and gender studies at the University of Michigan, Hitomi Tonomura said they saw the ponytail as a sign that Komuro didn’t live up to social expectations.
“If he was a singer or an artist, that would be fine. But people would think he doesn’t look like a lawyer or looks suitable for someone who will marry a royal woman,” said Tonomura, as quoted by CNN, Sunday (24/10).
Royal weddings are usually marked with pomp. However, this pair will actually be avoided from things that are considered to trigger rumors.
Other observers said it was a sign for small nobles who were dissatisfied with the rules of the past, regarding what they could do and who they could marry.
Princess Mako and Komuro had actually planned a wedding in 2018. But the Royal family felt that they were still under-prepared for this sacred event.
However, a number of parties said that Komuro’s mother, as a single parent, was deemed to have failed to pay off her former fiancé’s debt of US$36 thousand.
Komuro denied the rumors. He even released a 28-page statement stating that the money was a gift. The mother will also try to resolve the dispute.
Unfortunately, some tabloids dissect every aspect of the family’s life, some even write it down with someone who can’t be trusted and just wants wealth.
Tonomura said that even in the United States, people would not think his mother’s business was unrelated to Komuro Kei, which is different in Japan.
“(Komuro) is a grown man, people in Japan find this problematic and turn him from a nice, honest young man to a calculative opportunist who pursues prestige and maybe money,” he said.
