At a memorial ceremony held on the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida announced that he would strive for a world free of nuclear weapons.

However, he was silent on the Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty, but the mayor of Hiroshima urged the conclusion of the Nuclear Weapons Treaty and raised a different voice.

At 8:15 in the morning, the time when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan 78 years ago, the ‘Peace Bell’ rings.

About 50,000 people who attended the memorial ceremony held a moment of silence.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who has Hiroshima as a constituency, has repeatedly emphasized that Japan will strive for a world free of nuclear weapons as the only country bombed.

We promised to abide by the three non-nuclear principles of not manufacturing, possessing or importing nuclear weapons.

However, Kyodo News reported that Prime Minister Kishida did not make any mention of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at the event.

Japan, which enjoys the “nuclear umbrella” effect of the United States, has not signed the Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty on the grounds that it would negate its nuclear deterrence.

In the midst of this, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, who attended the event together, criticized the nuclear deterrence theory advocated by the leaders of the seven major countries and the G7.

At the same time, he argued that Japan should act as a bridge between nuclear and non-nuclear states and conclude a treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons as soon as possible.

The ceremony was attended by 111 countries and European representatives, the largest number ever, but Russia and Belarus, which invaded Ukraine, were not invited.
