Japanese Prime Minister Holds Meeting with Chinese Premier at ASEAN Summit

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met with Chinese Premier Li Chang at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit on the 6th.

`Japanese media outlets such as Kyodo News reported that Prime Minister Kishida had a short meeting with Prime Minister Lee right before the ASEAN+3 Summit involving Korea, Japan and China held in Jakarta, Indonesia on the same day.

Prime Minister Kishida told Prime Minister Li at the meeting that Japan and China needed to establish a “constructive and stable” relationship, a Japanese government source said.

The source also said Prime Minister Kishida repeatedly explained to Prime Minister Lee Japan’s position on the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which began late last month.

In response, Prime Minister Li said that Japan should fulfill its international obligations and handle the issue responsibly in the issue of the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

The Chinese government is responding strongly by suspending imports of Japanese fishery products in protest against Japan’s discharge of contaminated treated water.
