Japanese police arrest three ‘sushi terrorists’ who went viral

The Japanese police reports to AFP news agency that three youths aged 15, 19 and 21 from the Aichi region have been arrested. They are suspected of having ‘brought a company into trouble’. That could result in a prison sentence of up to three years, according to AFP.

Lick everything

It is about the ‘sushi terror’ that hit Japanese restaurants. For a few weeks now, videos have appeared on TikTok of young people licking food in a restaurant where sushi passes on a conveyor belt. There were all kinds of different films: plates or sushi were licked and then put back on the belt.

Young people also drank directly from a bottle of soy sauce that is also used by other tables or licked their fingers with which they then touched food. In other videos, the very sharp wasabi was smeared on food or the ‘sushi terrorists’ sprayed disinfectant hand gel over food.

The videos had major consequences for Kura Sushi, one of the affected companies with about 500 locations. Employees of Kura Sushi were instructed to clean with extra care. Yet customers stayed away en masse and many people filed complaints. The Japanese are known for their meticulousness when it comes to hygiene.

‘A crime’

Another affected company, Sushiro, even saw its shares fall in value because of the pranksters.

Kura Sushi says in a response that she is very happy with the arrests. “We hope people now understand that these ‘jokes’ jeopardize our relationship of trust with guests. It is a crime,” the company writes.
