The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency stated that it has confirmed that the small lunar probe successfully landed on the lunar surface. Communication between the probe and the ground is normal, but the solar cell of the probe is in a state where it is unable to generate electricity.

This is the first time that a Japanese probe has successfully landed on the lunar surface, making Japan the fifth country to land on the moon after the former Soviet Union, the United States, China, and India.

The probe was launched from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture in September last year on a Japanese domestic rocket. It chose an orbit with less fuel consumption and flew for about four months. It entered the lunar orbit on December 25 last year.
