The Japanese government on Friday urged residents and industrial sectors across Tokyo to conserve electricity consumption during July and August to ensure stable energy supplies during the summer peak, but did not set any targets.
It is expected that the country’s electricity market will witness less pressure this summer in most regions compared to last summer, when the government requested rationalization of electricity consumption throughout Japan, according to expectations of the Ministry of Industry in May.
But the ministry decided to urge rationing consumption “within a reasonable range” during these two months in areas supplied by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), with the reserve capacity rate estimated at less than five percent, close to the minimum to ensure stable electricity supply at three percent.
The ministry stated that the expected reserve capacity rate, in the event of a 10-year heat wave, in the Tokyo region was 3.1 percent in July and 4.8 percent in August, while the ratio in the rest of the country remained above five percent during these two months.
The decline in the reserve capacity rate to less than three percent threatens the occurrence of power outages and power shortages.
On the other hand, the electricity sector in Japan seeks to contribute to achieving the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, by using low- or no-emission fuels, such as hydrogen and ammonia, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46 percent, compared to 2013-2014 levels. .
Japan plans to burn ammonia and hydrogen fuels in power plants, at a combined rate of 1 percent, by the fiscal year from April 2030 to March 2031.
