On September 5th, the Japanese government held an event in Brussels to promote Japanese food and other products to relevant personnel in the European Union (EU). In particular, an exhibition area displaying foods from Fukushima Prefecture was set up, and staff from the Fukushima Prefectural Office also participated in the event. Japan will expand its food exports to the EU market in the context of China’s comprehensive ban on importing Japanese-made aquatic products, which has further damaged its image.

Objective To introduce the charm of Japanese local specialties by taking advantage of the opportunity that the European Union has completely lifted import restrictions on Japanese food in August.
The Japanese entertained the participants with alcohol produced in Fukushima Prefecture, boiled bonito flakes, and Japanese sweets made with dried persimmons. Relevant personnel from the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the Belgian royal family participated in the event, as well as diplomats from EU member states. A member of the European Parliament who tasted persimmons for the first time said, “It’s sweet and delicious. It will sell well in Europe.”
In order to open up the EU market, Japan set up a new branch of the “Export Support Platform” consisting of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in Brussels on September 5.
