The Japanese government has rejected some recent media reports that it has decided to internally cancel the holding of the Tokyo Olympics, which is scheduled for July.
Japanese Minister of Defense Sakai Manabu said at a regular briefing today (22nd) that there was no conclusion to cancel the Tokyo Olympics and that the government is preparing for the success of the event.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga also stressed that the Tokyo Olympics will be held as scheduled on this day, and that specific infection prevention measures are being reviewed in consultation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for a safe event.
The Tokyo Olympics, scheduled to be held in July of last year, were postponed for one year due to the aftermath of a novel coronavirus infection.
Earlier, the British newspaper The Times reported that there was an agreement that it was difficult to hold the Olympics within the government, citing a high-ranking Japanese government official, and that the Japanese government is focusing on the plan to host the 2032 Tokyo Olympics.
Meanwhile, in the history of the 124 Olympic Games, the Olympic Games have been canceled due to a war, but this is the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed like this.
