Japanese Government Decision to Transfer Patriot Missiles to US Strengthens Indo-Pacific Security

The Japanese government’s decision to transfer the Patriot missile defense missiles to the US will strengthen the security of the country and the entire Indo-Pacific region. This was stated in a statement by the US President’s national security assistant, Jake Sullivan, released by the White House press office.

“We welcome the Japanese government’s decision to transfer Patriot missiles to the US to replenish US stockpiles. This decision will serve the security of Japan and the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region by ensuring that US forces, in close coordination with the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSF), continue to have a credible deterrence and response capability,” said Sullivan.

Earlier, the Japanese authorities simplified the rules for the export of defense equipment, allowing the transfer to the United States of missiles for the Patriot anti-missile defense systems manufactured under license on Japanese soil. Until now, Tokyo could only supply components for defense equipment to the United States. Adopted reliefs will allow the delivery of finished equipment in countries that have issued production licenses.

As follows from a statement by the Japanese Foreign Ministry, the US government will have to obtain the prior consent of the Japanese authorities if Washington in the future decides to transfer to third countries missiles for Patriot systems produced on Japanese territory.
