It has been reported that the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Company are planning to begin the second discharge of radioactive contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on the 5th of next month.

According to a report from Fukushima Chuo TV, a local media outlet in Fukushima, Japan, on the 28th, Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to mix about 7,800 tons of contaminated water with a large amount of seawater and discharge it into the sea in front of the nuclear power plant during the second discharge period, as in the first discharge period.

The second discharge of contaminated water is scheduled to last for about 17 days, and 460 tons of contaminated water is expected to be discharged into the sea per day.

Previously, Tokyo Electric Power Company disclosed the results of sample analysis of tank C, which is subject to secondary discharge of contaminated water, and revealed radionuclides such as ‘carbon-14’, ‘cesium-137’, ‘cobalt-60’, and ‘iodine-129’. It was revealed that trace amounts of 4 species were detected. However, it was said to be significantly below the notified concentration limit, and “the results of this sample analysis, including not only the 29 types of measurement target but also 39 types of nuclides and tritium that are autonomously confirmed, were confirmed to meet the discharge standards.” explained.

When Japan’s plan to release contaminated water for the second time became known, the Korean government said, “We will continuously monitor the situation and take the best measures to prevent it from affecting the safety and health of the people.”

The Office for Government Policy Coordination said in a press release this afternoon, “As with the first discharge, we will thoroughly monitor the data provided by Tokyo Electric Power Company in real time and public information after sample collection and analysis.”

At the same time, in accordance with the ‘Korea-IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) Information Sharing Mechanism’ (IKFIM), we plan to receive information on IAEA verification activities through the dispatch of our experts to the IAEA Fukushima field office, video conferences, and written information sharing, etc., he said. “We plan to thoroughly check and inspect safety, including whether power is discharged as planned,” he added.

Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to discharge 31,200 tons of contaminated water into the sea four times by March of next year.
